After a weekend of excruciating pain and a resultant trip to a new dentist, they determined my wisdom teeth need to come out. Because of an infection I need to be on antibiotics for at least a week until the swelling goes down so my appointment is on Thursday, January 17. For the time being I have some Tylenol with Codeine to hold me over.

Anyone got any interesting stories about their experiences with wisdom tooth extraction?

I have some horror stories, but I’ll spare you the details.

I will advise you to avoid solid food for about three days afterwards. they’ll have you on some amazing painkillers afterwards, and you’ll feel incredible about 24 hours after the extractions. it’s not real, it’s just the meds. I made the mistake of eating spaghetti the next day because I felt so good. my jaw ached almost unbearably for two days after that, even with the meds.

also, the meds slow down your metabolism. don’t eat too much while taking them, or you’ll get sick. it’s an old instinctual response to things sitting in your stomach too long, your body thinks it’s foreign and wants to yack it up. puking over gaping holes in your mouth = not good. trust me on that one (one of the horror stories).

stick to jello, chicken broth, etc… things that are soft and easy to digest. supplement with vitamins if you need to. just don’t chew anything for AT LEAST two days.

I had all of mine extracted about 8 years ago. Prior to having them removed, I heard all kinds of horror stories from various people…which was awesome. Luckily for me, I had none of the problems people had mentioned. I will admit, I probably had them removed in an ideal situation…or as ideal as it can be without being able to keep them. Mine weren’t impacted, or infected, they just needed to be removed so they wouldn’t start/keep pushing on the rest of my teeth.

I had mine removed in the dentist’s office with good IV drugs and local anesthetic. The procedure was probably 2-3 hours (?), but it felt like 15 minutes. I was conscious the entire time, but feeling REALLY good. I could feel the pressure, but that was about it. The most annoying thing was the gaping holes left behind. Absolutely impossible to eat anything without it getting caught in those holes. It was nice that they gave me a handy syringe that I could use to ’squirt’ the food bits out. num! Other than those inconvenient holes, I was in pretty good shape. I even went to school the next day.
