On April 19, about week after the Frames show, KEXP put on another listener show. I’d seen Ted Leo open up for Death Cab For Cutie back in December and was seriously unimpressed by them (only slightly more than Death Cab themselves, as the Key Arena was like the anti-venue for their music. Oddly Jenny Lewis was the highlight of the show!) I’d heard Ted Leo on the radio countless times and enjoyed what I heard then so I chalked up the Key Arena fiasco to just being the wrong place and figured I should give them another chance. I was glad I did as the Triple Door offered a much more appropriate space for them. The only problem was the volume, as Ted Leo tends to be extremely loud. Luckily I’d brought earplugs, which made the audio level comfortable. The show was much more solid than the previous one I’d seen and it felt like he was using the space to his advantage rather than trying to beef up his sound to fill a basketball stadium. This show was even better to listen to on the re-broadcast because it allowed me to hear the bits I missed due to the earplugs. I now feel justified in recommending this group for live shows since they lived up to their reputation.
