First step taken

Job interview went really well. The people I talked to were friendly and seemed impressed with me. They’re having me come back later in the week to meet more of the team.

Ah-LOO-minum

“The confusion over the aluminum/aluminium spelling arose because of some uncharacteristic indecisiveness on Davy’s part. When he first isolated the element in 1808, he called it alumium. For some reason he thought better of that and changed it to aluminum four years later. Americans dutifully adopted the new term, but many British users disliked aluminum, pointing out that it disrupted the -ium pattern established by sodium, calcium, and strontium, so they added a vowel and syllable.” –Bill Bryson, A Short History of Nearly Everything

I read that passage while sitting in the park this evening and thought I’d share it since it’s a topic of much amusement and discussion from time to time.

Sia – Breathe Me

Help, I have done it again
I have been here many times before
Hurt myself again today
And, the worst part is there’s no-one else to blame

Be my friend
Hold me, wrap me up
Unfold me
I am small
I’m needy
Warm me up
And breathe me

Ouch I have lost myself again
Lost myself and I am nowhere to be found,
Yeah I think that I might break
I’ve lost myself again and I feel unsafe

Be my friend
Hold me, wrap me up
Unfold me
I am small
I’m needy
Warm me up
And breathe me

Be my friend
Hold me, wrap me up
Unfold me
I am small
I’m needy
Warm me up
And breathe me

Six Feet Under finale (spoliers)

After Ross mentioned he’d just watched the last episode of Six Feet Under, I decided I’d go back and watch the last ten minutes of it. Overall, this has to be the single best series finale in existence. Not only is it intensely emotional, but I can so easily relate to it…the second viewing was no less emotional than the first. At the risk of providing spoilers, I’ll say only this: Claire drives across the country to begin a new life in New York, which was so familiar to me as I had just done the same on my trek to Seattle, and I watched this only two weeks after having done that…and all the while she’s driving, the song “Breathe Me” by Sia (an Australian singer in the group Zero7) is playing over a montage of all the main characters’ death scenes. (All set years into the future.) I think it’s necessary to have seen the whole series to appreciate just how heart-wrenching this conclusion is…you grow to love and care for each of these characters as if you know them personally…they are so real and so tangible, and you can relate to their struggles. Huuuu. I think I’ll finish my wine and listen to “Breathe Me” about 5 more times before bed.
